Fields of application
Ytterbium is added to alloys for stainless steel and processed in the production of catalysts and semiconductors. Like other rare earth elements, ytterbium is used to produce permanent magnets. Here, it is alloyed with cobalt, iron, and manganese. In nuclear medicine, the isotope of ytterbium functions as a gamma radiation source.
