Germanium is one of the most important basic materials for the production of fiber-optic cables. As an optical waveguide, it plays a key role in the global expansion of the fiber-optic network and the 5G mobile network. A further important application is in infrared optics, in which crystalline germanium is used to produce infrared-permeable glasses and lenses. Examples of specific applications are night vision devices and thermal image cameras.
A further major consumer is the plastics industry, which uses the raw material in oxide form as a polymerization catalyst. A further application for the metal is as semiconductors in electronics and in photovoltaics.
