The most critical market for platinum is automotive catalytic converters, especially for diesel vehicles. The precious metal is also used in reforming catalysts in combination with rhenium. As a catalyst, it is also needed for large-scale industrial processes such as nitric acid and thermocouples production or for materials in the dental sector. Platinum is used in resistance wires for airbag igniters and spark plug electrodes. In addition, platinum is most usually used in producing laboratory equipment because it does not produce flame coloration.

In the future, platinum could also play a key role in fuel cell technology. In producing emission-free hydrogen, the metal is used together with iridium as a catalyst.
