Market forecasts:
- According to EU legislation on critical raw materials (CRMA), bismuth is considered a strategic raw material. It is therefore of particular importance to the industry and has high supply risks. The USA, UK, Canada, Australia and South Korea also classify the metal as a critical raw material. Bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃) is the most common thermoelectric compound, used in applications ranging from temperature sensors to power generation from waste heat; the market is small, but is expected to grow with a growing focus on energy efficiency and heat recovery.1
- Photovoltaics is seen as a potential driver of demand for bismuth. The metal is used as a solder material in solar modules.2
