Tungsten is valued above all for its extremely high melting point and strength. It is a key component of hard metals and is used to harden and refine steel, for example in tools or high-temperature applications. In nickel-based superalloys, for example, it is used in engines and turbines. In the military, it is used both for modern armouring and for armour-piercing bullets.

The metal also plays an important role in electronics, for example as a material in semiconductor production and in electrical contacts or special lighting.

In medical technology, tungsten is used in radiation protection materials, contrast media and surgical instruments due to its high density.
