Titanium, a strong and lightweight raw material, is a key component in the aerospace industry. In the defence sector, titanium is also in demand for pressure-resistant submarine hulls, as it combines strength, low weight and non-magnetic properties. Titanium is also used in the chemical and automotive industries, as well as in civil shipbuilding, steam turbines and seawater desalination. In permanent magnets based on Alnico alloys (aluminium, nickel, cobalt, iron and copper), it enhances the magnetic properties; in the form of ferrotitanium, it acts as a steel modifier. Owing to its good biocompatibility, titanium is ideally suited for medical implants. Another area of application is the production of metal foams, for example for implants or reaction vessels in the chemical industry.
