Silicon is irreplaceable as a metal powder in pyrotechnic ignition mixtures for mining and airbags. The aluminium and steel industries process silicon into alloys, while the chemical industry uses it for the production of silicones. As a semiconductor, silicon is an essential component in transistors, which in turn are indispensable for electronic components such as chips. In the form of high-purity polysilicon, the metal is used to produce the widely used monocrystalline solar cells. High-performance ceramics and processing in glass, cement, concrete and porcelain are further areas of application.
