Gadolinium is used as an electrolyte material for stationary fuel cells, among other things. Other applications include shielding and control rods in nuclear power reactors, alloys, phosphors, catalysts, magnetic coolants and microwave technology. Gadolinium is also known from medicine, where it is used in the production of MRI contrast agents. Gadolinium can also be added to permanent magnets made from the alloy neodymium-iron-boron, which are used in technologies such as electromobility and wind power.
