In addition to various chemical and electronic applications, low-melting alloys are an important area of use for bismuth. These alloys are used in sprinkler systems, fuel tanks, steam boilers, safety valves or to seal decommissioned oil wells, among other things. Pigments are another major area of application, and bismuth is also used in the manufacture of semiconductor components. The metal has also become a sought-after substitute for lead, for example for applications in the food industry, as unlike lead it is non-toxic.
