Samarium

Colour

Silvery-white as a metal; yellowish as samarium oxide

Characteristics

In air it is relatively stable as a metal and it forms a passivating protective layer. It reacts strongly with water producing hydrogen and samarium hydroxide.

Applications

It is used in the manufacture of samarium-cobalt-magnets and as an absorber material for thermal neutrons in the nuclear technology. It is applied in the chemical catalysis as well as in cancer therapy. Moreover, samarium is used in optical glasses and also in the laser technology.
