Silvery as a metal; white as lutetium oxide
It is a soft heavy metal with the highest density of all lanthanoids. It only dissolves slowly in water but faster in acids producing hydrogen.
As a metal it is of no economic importance. However, lutetium oxide is increasingly used in the manufacture of luminescent material. Besides, the oxide is processed in the laser technology as well as in the production of scintillator crystals.
