Silvery-white as a metal; yellowish as lanthanum oxide
It is an easily malleable metal that reacts immediately with dry air to form an oxide layer. Lanthanum decomposes water slowly with the production of hydrogen.
It is applied in optical as well as in chemical glasses. Moreover, it is needed for the production of pigments, colors and varnishes. Lanthanum is also indispensable in exhaust gas and petrochemical catalysts. It serves as an activator in the manufacture of luminescent material. Besides, it is used to produce animal feed and fertilizers.
