Tellurium is an important raw material for the energy transition, as it is used in high-purity form to produce cadmium telluride for use in thin-film photovoltaic systems. Another major application is the production of bismuth telluride, which is used in thermoelectric devices for cooling and energy generation. As an alloy additive, tellurium optimises the properties of steel, copper and lead, among others. Other applications include catalysts for the production of synthetic fibres, pigments for glass and ceramics and the vulcanisation of rubber.
