An important field of application for lanthanum is mischmetal, an alloy of CeriumLanthanum, Praseodymium and other rare earth elements, which is used as an additive in the production of aluminium and steel, but is also required for flints in lighters. Even without other rare earth elements, lanthanum is a sought-after alloy additive, e.g. to improve the corrosion resistance of superalloys at high temperatures. Lanthanum is also used to produce solid electrolytes, which are necessary for future technologies such as solid-state batteries, stationary fuel cells and water electrolysis.
