Silvery-white as a metal; white as holmium oxide

It has special magnetic characteristics and is rated as easily malleable. Holmium is relatively stable in dry air. Nevertheless, metallic holmium should only be stored under protective gas or paraffin oil, as it tends to oxidize.

It is used in optical glasses as well as in metal vapor lamps. Due to its outstanding magnetic characteristics, holmium is essential for the production of ultra strong magnetic fields. It is used as screening material in the nuclear technology and for the production of ferrite in radio electronics.
