Goals and Opportunities: A Whitepaper on Europe’s Critical Raw Materials Act
More mining, more recycling: This whitepaper provides insight into Europe’s general raw materials strategy and analyzes its measures and targets.
Frankfurt am Main, 7. Mai 2024 – TRADIUM GmbH, one of Europe’s most renowned raw materials suppliers, has released a whitepaper on the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). Written in partnership with research and advisory firm Adamas Intelligence and Rawmaterials.net/Rohstoff.net, the paper highlights the Act’s key points and analyzes its impact on the security of raw materials supplies.
TRADIUM published an initial view of the CRMA in March that noted some unanswered questions. The new whitepaper presents an in-depth analysis of the supply of critical raw materials, particularly lithium and rare earths.
CRMA Background
The European Union’s Raw Materials Act will come into force on May 23 and will be a milestone in the EU’s efforts to diversify and secure its supply chains for strategic raw materials. The Act is based on a list of 34 so-called critical raw materials, 16 of which are classified as strategically important to industry and for which a supply risk exists. The Act’s binding targets for domestic mining, processing, and recycling are intended to reduce EU dependence on imported raw materials and strengthen the security of supply.
Focus on Lithium and Rare Earth Elements
The whitepaper also analyzes the CRMA’s goals and measures for the battery metal lithium and heavy and light rare earths. These raw materials are crucial for the energy and transport transition and modern magnet technologies. Among other topics, the paper provides specific information on the current supply situation, the development of demand, and the challenges along the value chain.
The paper highlights, among other things:
- the current supply situation and demand trends for lithium and rare earths,
- the importance of diversifying supply chains for strategic raw materials,
- challenges regarding recycling and building a circular economy for these raw materials and
- the viability of the targets for mining and processing to be achieved by 2030.
