Gadolinium

Gadolinium

Colour

Silvery-white as a metal; white as gadolinium oxide

Characteristics

It is an easy malleable metal that stands out due to its special magnetic characteristics. It has a tendency to oxidation in metallic form. As gadolinium oxide it is insoluble in water, however it is partly hygroscopic.

Applications

Gadolinium is used for producing control rods in nuclear reactors and is a component of many magnet alloys. It is needed for pharmaceutical diagnosis as well as for ceramic spray powders. Gadolinium is used for the manufacture of optical special glasses and of luminescent material and fluorescent powder. Gallium-gadolinium-garnet is used for producing magneto-optical storages.
