Silvery-white as a metal; white as dysprosium oxide
As a metal it’s highly reactive; oxidizes quickly when exposed to air. It’s insoluble in water, slightly hygroscopic and highly magnetic.
Dysprosium is an important component of permanent magnets that are applied in wind turbines, electronic devices or in various small automotive engines. Moreover, dysprosium is used as a doping tool in luminescent material, as well as a shielding tool in the nuclear technology. It is also of vital importance for the manufacture of halogen lamps, where dysprosium takes over a significant function in the discharge vessel.
