Chromium belongs to the heavy metals group and has a high melting point. It is stable in air due to a thin oxide layer that protects from corrosion and other reactions. Chromium is even resistant to water and non-oxidizing acids.
Due to its stability, chromium is mainly used for surface coatings and for the manufacture of ferrochromium steels as well as electronic components. Furthermore, it is applied in high temperature fuel cells.
