Silvery as a metal; ligt pink as europium oxide
It is the most reactive metal from all lanthanoids. It only dissolves very slowly in water, whereas very well in acids. With a melting point of 826°C, europium melts at a relatively low temperature compared to the other rare earth metals. Europium oxide is insoluble in water and has a monoclinic crystal structure.
Europium is mainly applied as a doping tool for the production of luminescent material to create red lightning effects. However, the required quantities have decreased significantly due to new technologies, such as LED. Europium is also used in the nuclear technology because it absorbs thermal neutrons.
