Silvery-white as a metal; white as scandium oxide
Scandium is rated as a light metal due to its low density. In metallic form it is relatively stable in air and forms a passivating protective layer. It is soft and easily formable at room temperature.
It is part of aluminium alloys in the manufacture of components in aircraft construction to improve the tensile strength and corrosion resistance while reducing weight. These characteristics make scandium also interesting for the construction of trains and vessels. New developments based on scandium ensure a reduction of the operating temperature of fuel cells. Furthermore, scandium is used for high-performance-high-pressure-mercury vapor lamps as well as for the doping of magnetic storage in the computer industry.
