Ruthenium is a silvery-white shining precious metal from the platinum metals group. It is a very hard and brittle metal with extremely high melting and boiling points. Even at high temperatures it can therefore not be formed by standard metal working processes.
Adding Ruthenium to Platinum and Palladium alloys increases their wear resistance, and already a small amount of Ruthenium in Titanium alloys greatly increases the corrosion resistance. It is a component of super alloys for turbine blades. Moreover, it is used for cytostatic drugs in cancer therapy and for catalytic reactions in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Ruthenium is applied as a coating of hard disks and solar cells as well as of titanium anodes in the chlorine-alkaline electrolysis.
